Maximizing Employees or Internships without Hardships

Directors’s Cut – Interns and Cooperative Education Students

I have hired probably about 20 internships (interns)/co-operative education students (co-op) over my career.  I was myself a beneficiary of being a co-op WAAYY back in the late 1980’s at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary, Alberta.

Over the intervening 20+ years I have come up with a model to maximize the benefits of interns/co-ops while minimizing the cost.  The result was the following article published in the October 2009 edition of the CMA Magazine.  The article was largely faithful to the original concepts however I have provided a Director’s Cut for those who want a bit more information as well. Maximizing potential employees,  CMA Management; Oct2009, Vol. 83 Issue 6, p18-2; Downloadable PDF available Here (Copyright Applies).

Enjoy and let me know of your thoughts or comments on this article.  In addition, I am also going to create a hall of fame/shame of how best to manage a co-op/internship program.  If you have material that is available in the public domain (or which you will grant me a license to reproduce here); send it to me and I will add it to this collection.
