The VMS Landscape

A NAIT Student Team spent a few months researching and compiling a list of volunteer management software. This post provides interactive access to this research.

Pity the poor non-profit thinking about implementing commercial volunteer management software (VMSo). They start with a Google search and realize that there are at least a hundred vendors. Pricing is opaque at times and the marketing copy tends to blur together. If only there was at least a list of vendors…

NAIT to the Rescue!

The Canadian Birkebeiner Society (the Birkie) worked with the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) on a student capstone project within the Bachelor of Technology. Their biographies are provided below. Two of these students also contributed to a conference hosted by the Chartered Professional Accountants of Alberta entitled Systematically Herding Cats and Volunteers on May 28, 2024.

Caveats as Far as the Eye Can See

The project team scanned the marketplace and the following graphics and tables are the result. Non-profits are welcome to use this information … if the agree to the following terms of use:

  1. Student Project. The research that was carried out was part of a student project. The primary objective of the project was to teach research and market analysis skills and secondarily make the information available to the Birkie and the public. These means, EXPECT some errors, gaps, etc.
  2. Point in Time. The research was primarily carried out in the Spring of 2024 and will NOT be updated. Information is a perishable commodity so recognize this if using the information 1, 2, 5, or more years in the future.
  3. No Vendor Validation. The research was primarily carried out through internet searches. If you are a vendor and would like your record removed, added, or amended, I am happy to do so. Please leave a comment or email frank@myorgbio.org. You can also download, update, highlight your changes, and I will incorporate them.

Okay with the terms, then feel free to access and save a copy of the file. Due to some features, the file is only available via a Google Sheet.

You have to save a copy to your GDrive to use the drop down functionality. If you make any cool changes, please let me know and I may incorporate them!

Sorry, drop downs do not work on a view only version. You must save it to your GDrive for this functionality.
