River Lot 56 is one of the original parcels of land subdivided during settlement of the region during the 1900s. In 1965, the land was transferred to the provincial government. Since 1973, local groups have maintained the area for outdoor education and nature-based recreation. The area contains upland aspen forests, streambed communities and open meadows which provide habitat for several wildlife species. (Government of Alberta)

Located in Sturgeon County but adjacent to St. Albert, River Lot 56 is an excellent area to practice snowshoeing in a safe near-urban setting. The area is bisected East-West by Sir Winston Churchill/Sturgeon Road. The Northern (river side) portion is smaller but is also connected to St. Albert’s park system and there is a warm up area and washroom in the Kingswood Pavilion.
The Southern portion is off Poundmaker Road and is about 2-3 times larger but there are no services (washrooms, etc.). Both sections have track set cross-country ski trails. Walkers and snowshoers are welcome but they are asked to avoid stepping on the tracks.
