A Jack (of all tools) In the Box

An update to the QIR Project Tool, an All-in-One Tool Kit for small Projects. Contains a Project Plan, Contact List, and a QDIRF.

The inter-related elements of the QIR Log (questions, answers, risks and issues).
The inter-related elements of the QIR Log (questions, answers, risks and issues).

About a year ago, I had introduced A QIR Project Tool. It was used to capture not only traditional issues and risks but also questions. Ideally, the more questions captured, the fewer risks and issues that developed.

QIR Becomes QDIRF

Building on the QIR, I am pleased to introduce QIR’s younger sibling – QDIRF. How fast they grow up, just a year ago QDIRF was a twinkle in the eyes of decision and defect log (the source of the D and F). Now, QDIRF has quietly displaced his older brother.

Don’t worry though, QDIRF still manages questions, issues and risks just like QIR but has a larger repertoire of what decisions were made. After all the project work is done, QDIRF can also manage defects or Faults (and because the ‘D’ was taken).

GANTT Stop There!

But wait, there is more!

QDIRF has partnered with two other common project mainstays – project plan and contact list. The Project Plan is suitable for running a simple project. For example, one involving fewer than a half dozen people and lasting less than about 6 months.

Beyond that approximate size, consider using a dedicated tool such as Microsoft Project or the gazillion online collaboration tools.

A Logical Addition

Because I am occasionally asked to complete them, I have also included a template for A Logical Framework (LF). LF’s are a surprisingly useful tool in planning a project although they also become incredibly clunky very quickly as a project morphs into reality.

SNP Project and Organizational Literacy

This tool is part of a larger set of tools I am developing and delivering to support Small Non-Profits. They are all praca-demic in nature, meaning that they have a strong methodological basis but also are meant to be practical to the harassed volunteers and staff of an organization. QDIRF improves the first two “C’s” of the 4C’s: Communication, Coordination, Control & Command.

Where Does the Time Go

The final addition is a time tracking tool which maps effort against either project plan elements or questions.
