George Lake Natural Area (North and South) [RESEARCH AND WRITING]

[RESEARCH AND WRITING] > [FINAL EDITING]

Back to North West Quadrant – YEG-Ville.

George Lake Natural Area is separated into two sections. The Northern one is on George Lake proper but has no direct road access. The University of Alberta owns the section of land off highway 651 and to the south.

The southern portion is East and off highway 777. It includes a small [LAKE?] and is surrounded by private land.

The Fast Facts

George Lake North

Access and ownership to the Northern portion is unknown at this time. [CONTACT UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA TO DETERMINE LANDOWNERSHIP].

George Lake South

No parking to access the area besides the side of the road. Some ATV activity and foot traffic. There are no facilities and you may need to share the lake with some ATV activity and other walkers. There is a small body of water (unnamed) in the Northeast corner of the property to which the trails tend the gravitate. In 2020, the beavers had created an extensive dam structure on the outlet of this lake.

Suitable for Beginners+ as there may be some route finding once off the trails bashed through the bush by the ATVs. Nevertheless, worthwhile poking around for a half day or so. Consider combining with George Lake North (above) [ONCE ACCESS TO GEORGE LAKE NORTH IS DETERMINED].

Area Details

  • Is it Worth It and Why Go Here?: (South) Maybe, it is not a marquee destination. Nevertheless, it is large enough to warrant a poke around. Remember there are no facilities in the area (washrooms, parking, etc.).
  • Map Reference, Location and Wayne Gretzky Units:
  • Difficulty Level & Safety:
    • South: Beginner if you stay off the water otherwise High Beginner. Care should be taken walking on the outlet of the lake as ice depth can vary greatly.
    • North: TBD
  • Links: See Notes and References.
    • Government of Alberta Website.
    • [OTHER].
  • The Drive Out: The most expedient way to get to both locations is via Highway 2 and west on secondary Highway 651. Consider driving up highway 777 instead. A bit slower but also more views of rural Alberta.
  • The Other Shoe: Walking.
  • Kid Rating: Not kid focused.
  • Frank’s Trip Notes: First done: 2020-12-28.

  1. Hi, I’m curious if you can share any further details about the waterbody on the south recreational George Lake area that the UofA owns – mentioned in this post? Are there fish in the water?
